Your most expensive mistake?
Boris Becker's "5-second" bonk of a Russian model in a restaurant broom cupboard cost him an estimated £20 million.
I can't compete with that, but did write off £64 grand to the inland revenue which a little more effective persuasion on my part might have saved.

Fucking hell just read about that apple guy

"in the early 1990s Wayne sold the original Apple company agreement, signed in 1976 by Jobs, Wozniak and himself, for $500. In 2011 the contract was sold at auction for $1.6 million"

Not the luckiest of chaps !!

I don't think anyone is ever going to come close to Ronald Wayne.

One of the founders of Apple, he sold his share for $800

His stake would now be worth about $75,000,000,000

SEVENTY FIVE FUCKING BILLION

Re: Your most expensive mistake?

Irish market was a classic case of banks throwing money at people regardless of their ability to pay it back

And people all got swept up in the madness and went fucking mental spending for a decade.

It was common for the bank to email or write (completely unsolicited) to you and let you know "you have been approved for a 30k loan, so if you want to upgrade your car, go on a nice holiday, or just want it for a rainy day, give a call and we will arrange everything online"

It was fucking insane what was going on.

Irish market a classic case of over supply. Bought my gaff in Hackney in 07 for £280....worth just shy of a square bag now.

Re: Your most expensive mistake?

Bought apt for 220k in 2004, turned down 725k for it in 2008 as estate agent assured me it would go for 750k, the country then essentially collapsed the following month.

Got it valued in 2014 at €240k.

Sold it last month for 405k.

The rollercoaster of a banking collapse. One little apt went thru a 500k swing in 6 years !

Re: Your most expensive mistake?
Bought a half share in a business in 2008 for £225,000 and sold it back to the same guy 5 years later for £35,000

My own stupid fault.

Yeah similar story my nan was annoyed with how long hours my grandad did so he bought her a house on Bishops Avenue. She hated it and sold quickly to move back to their small house in Ruislip.

Not sure how this fits in with the title of this thread, but I once had the opportunity to buy a genuinely owned Jimi Hendrix strat for £8000 backin the 80's
I had the money in an account but bottled it because I was too worried it would get stolen!

The guitar would be worth about £300,000 today!!

I totally fucking regret it, not for the money, but for the guitar

Re: Your most expensive mistake?
I was offered a 1 bed garden flat on Frognal back in 1993 for £85k in a back 2 back deal and I turned it down - daren't think what it'd be worth now.

Then when I split with the ex Mrs B I could have bought her out for around £20k in 2005 - sold the house for £250k - now it's worth around £650k and I only had a £120k mortgage.

Re: Your most expensive mistake?
You think that's bad Eddie B son, check this out. My dad and his brothers had a carpentry/ furniture/ building firm in the 60s in Poplar, and through various business deals at one point owned half the then emptying warehouses along the Highway and in Limehouse. My dad said to his brothers, why dont we do these up and turn them into flats, which the rest said was a silly idea and they lobbed them out for fuck all.

True story that. My uncle Harry told me about it about 3 years ago just before he died. He was gutted.

Re: Your most expensive mistake?
Not me but my dad. Looking to move from Courage Close in Gidea Park in the early 70s, had to decide between somewhere in Cranham and somewhere in Hornchurch. They chose Cranham.
Only about 10 years back did I find out the place in Hornchurch was, more specifically, Emerson Park, and it was the house on the corner of Parkstone Ave and Ernest Road.

Re: Your most expensive mistake?
My father-in law (who was a doctor), was offered an entire building in Harley Street back in the 60s for £8k.

Needless to say, he couldn't quite afford this as £8k was quite a lot of money back then.

He did come to regret not stretching himself on that one though...

It has to either be not putting enough on a bet or not placing a bet on a 50 to 1 horse that I was told several times by someone in the know to bet on and bet big.

Not mine but Mrs N/Sold... she phoned me up to tell me she had spent £300 on a sofa... bloke knocked on the door saying he was a delivery man and had a spare sofa... she bought it.... I cam e home ... took one look at it and then dragged it outside and took a axe to it.... I reckon one spark and it would have lit up like the 4th July...
